“Tattooing is an art form that has no limits, capable of telling stories, transforming lives, and connecting people to their deeper selves. Each piece I create is more than just ink on skin—it’s a journey, an expression of the individual’s essence, woven into a design with profound meaning. Drawing from ancient cultures, magic, and sacred geometry, I aim to create tattoos that carry not only beauty but power.” Introducing Mr J Finline, born Jorge Segovia and his ‘geo-realistic’ style he talks about in this interview.
“I’m originally from Madrid, Spain, but my life’s journey took me across the Atlantic to grow up in the USA, where I was exposed to diverse cultures and perspectives that shaped my creativity. Today, I’m based between the vibrant energy of New York and the rich history of Cologne, Germany. These cities provide the perfect contrast and balance, fueling my artistic inspiration. I thrive on the movement between these places, constantly evolving as I merge different influences to create something fresh and boundary-pushing for each client.”
How did you become a tattoo artist, and what is your background?
My path into tattooing was far from traditional, and that’s what makes it powerful. After studying music at Berkeley University and earning a master’s degree, I realized my true calling wasn’t behind a desk or in the concert hall, but in the raw, transformative world of tattooing.
I’ve always seen the human body as a canvas, one that’s capable of carrying art that is both intimate and deeply personal.
Tattooing allows me to bring my passion for precision and detail into play, creating art that resonates with people in ways no other medium can. I’ve mastered the delicate balance of intricate detail and powerful symbolism, and I’m here to elevate tattooing to its rightful place in the world of fine art.”
Your nickname explains your style well: what do you like to say about it, any specific techniques or favourite subjects?
“Mr. J Fineline isn’t just a nickname—it’s a philosophy. My work revolves around precision, delicacy, and elegance, but it’s also about pushing the boundaries of what fine-line tattooing can achieve. I’ve developed a unique style I call ‘Georealism,’ a fusion of hyper-realistic organic subjects with the structured, mathematical beauty of geometric patterns.
This combination draws from sacred geometry, a concept that connects us to the universe’s inherent balance and energy. I don’t just want to create tattoos; I want to design pieces that are transformative, both visually and spiritually. Every line, every dot serves a purpose, becoming part of something much greater than just a piece of body art.”
You like to combine figurative subjects with geometric elements why?
Combining figurative subjects with geometric elements is a deliberate choice to unite two worlds: the physical and the metaphysical. Ancient cultures knew the power of symbols, and sacred geometry holds keys to understanding the universe’s underlying structure. By fusing realism—natural forms that ground us in the present—with these timeless geometric shapes, I create a bridge between the individual’s story and the universal forces that connect us all.
I also draw heavily from music’s rhythm and structure, as it mirrors the same balance and flow found in my geometric designs. The end result is a tattoo that speaks to both the soul and the universe, something deeply personal yet infinitely connected to something larger.”
Do you work alone or in a tattoo shop with a team?
I work alone, and that’s how I prefer it. The solitude allows me to dive deep into each project, ensuring every tattoo I design is a true reflection of my client’s vision and story. There’s a profound connection in that one-on-one collaboration, a kind of magic that happens when I can focus all of my energy and creativity on one person’s journey. Every tattoo is a partnership, a shared vision that’s uniquely tailored, and working solo gives me the freedom to make each piece as perfect as it can be.”
Where do you get inspiration for your work?
“My work is inspired by the limitless beauty of the world around me—ancient history, sacred geometry, nature, and music all play key roles in shaping my designs. I draw from the rich symbolism of ancient cultures, where every shape and pattern held deep meaning, and I use those same principles to imbue my tattoos with layers of significance.
Sacred geometry provides a universal language of balance and harmony, while nature’s organic forms ground my work in the present.
And music—music is the heartbeat of my creativity. It gives rhythm and flow to my designs, allowing me to create tattoos that feel alive and resonate on a deeper, emotional level. My goal is to create art that not only reflects the individual’s story but also connects them to something far greater.”
What are your hobbies, and where do you hope your job as a tattoo artist will take you?
I constantly seek growth and transformation. Whether through tattooing or playing music, which remains a deep passion of mine, I’m always striving to push boundaries. Music isn’t just a hobby; it’s another language of expression that mirrors my approach to tattooing—both are about rhythm, precision, and emotion.
My vision is to see tattoo artists recognized worldwide as true artists, creators of fine art, not just technicians. I want to break the stereotype of tattooing being ‘copy-paste’ work and elevate it to the respect it deserves. I believe tattoos are powerful, transformative pieces of art that carry meaning, energy, and personal stories. My journey is to bring that vision to life, creating a legacy that shows the world what tattooing can truly be.”
