Interview full of warmth and enthusiasm with this Edinburgh ‘Empire Ink’ artist who was lucky enough in 2023 to also work closely with Lucasfilm/Disney.
Ross, I know that your entry into the world of tattooing occurred around 2015/2016, approximately ten years ago. What did your first years as a professional teach you that was really important?
Yes, my early years as a professional taught me several key lessons. Patience and perseverance are crucial, as mastering tattooing takes time. Building strong client relationships through good communication is essential. Continuous learning and staying updated with new techniques and styles are vital for growth.
Many might describe your style as Black-n-Grey Realism while you once correctly spoke of “Dark Realism”. And that adjective – “Dark” – for me explains a lot about your approach to tattoo art…
Yes, “Dark Realism” fits my style. It’s like Black and Grey Realism but with a more intense, moody vibe. I love using high use of black ink to give great contrast to my use of negative space.
You say that you have always drawn a lot since you were little, it was your favorite recreational activity, but what was the fundamental step in approaching tattoo art compared to painting, illustration, the world of comics etc.?
I’ve always loved drawing since I was a little kid, but the key step toward tattoo art came when I realized how unique and personal tattoos are.
Unlike painting or illustration, tattoos are a permanent part of someone’s body and story.
The idea of creating art that people carry with them for life really inspired me to pursue tattooing over other forms of art.
Have you managed to tattoo three of your favorite subjects in the meantime? Namely Slash from Guns N’ Roses, Walt Disney and Quint from ‘Jaws’ movie?
Not yet, but I’m hopeful! They are all still on my tattoo bucket list. Each of these subjects has a unique appeal, and I look forward to the day I get to bring them to life in my work. Watch this space!
Is tattooing at ‘Empire Ink’ in Edinburgh different to tattooing in the rest of the UK? Is there a particular Scottish air in the way you approach tattoo art?
Tattooing at ‘Empire Ink’ (IG: @empire.ink.studios) in Edinburgh does feel different. There’s a unique vibe at ‘Empire Ink’, and the local clients bring their own stories and inspirations. It gives my work a special touch compared to other places in the UK.
Reading some of your other interviews I found you to be an artist truly focused on the ethics of your work, who deeply believes in certain values linked to his profession. What do you think about it?
Yes! I strongly pride myself in the ethics of my work. It’s important to maintain high standards, respecting clients. Values like honesty and integrity are key to what I do.
Do you have a “dream convention” you’d like to attend (and maybe even win a prize)?
All conventions are amazing and a great opportunity to connect with other artists. I would love to attend famous such as ‘Gods of Ink’ (IG: @godsofinktattooconvention) & ‘New York Empire State Tattoo Expo’ (IG: @nyempirestatetattooexpo) one day. I think those would be amazing to be a part of!
Your favorite memory connected to a tattoo convention?
One of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced is winning an award! I worked the ‘Big North Tattoo Show’ (IG: @bignorthtattooshow) in 2019 and was lucky enough to win “Best Small Black & Grey” award at the show. I’m always striving for more!
How do you see yourself – artistically speaking – five years from now?
Artistically, in five years, I see myself continuing to refine my style and exploring new techniques. I aim to push my boundaries, take on more complex projects, and hopefully, have my work recognized on a larger scale. I’ve been incredibly fortunate throughout my career so far, working many conventions, including ‘The Scottish Tattoo Convention’ (IG: @scottishtattooconvention) multiple times, and even being a Judge for the “Small Black and Grey” panel at this year’s show.
You are a very positive person and enthusiastic about what you do. How was your 2023? For example, I know that you even worked for Lucasfilm/Disney…
Yeah, in 2023 I was lucky enough to work at ‘Star Wars Celebration’ (IG: @StarWarsCelebration) in London! It’s a Lucasfilm/Disney (IG: @lucasfilm) expo that showcases the latest movies/shows for Disney.
I was part of “Ink Fusion Empire” – a selected team of artists specifically licensed by Lucasfilm to produce Star Wars related tattoos. Incredible experience!
I hope in 5 years’ time to be doing more of these shows. I’ve got some amazing sponsors supporting me along my tattoo journey as ‘Ink Doctor Tattoo Care’ & ‘Atlas Cartridges’. They’ve helped me better my work with their products. So I hope to be lucky enough to acquire more sponsors within the next 5 years!
Last question – I know you’re a big fan of music and movies, so I was wondering if you have a particular quote that best defines you as a person.
Walt Disney said it best – “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them!”.
