We caught up with the Orange County artist working at ‘Dana Point Tattoo’. And we asked him about his tattoos ranging from female faces to wild animals.
Hi, Matt! How did it happen that you found yourself working as a tattoo artist in sunny Orange County?
When I was 18 or 19 I was sponsored by a clothing store that also did piercings and tattoos and then I ended up working there as a helper. At the time I was going to school as well for graphics.
Flowers, ethereal women, skeletons and the animal world: does your art sublimate here? Are these four subjects enough for you to reach your climax?
I love these subjects! For my style or Neo Trad style they bode well. Plus you never stop growing and getting better. I also don’t think there’s a climax you can reach as an artist.
Do you want to be a tattooer? Well, you should always be growing and learning.
What do you normally look for in a woman’s face when you are about to draw her on your customer’s skin?
A lot of it has to do with the placement where the tattoos are going. You know, certain face angles work better in certain areas. I think sharper faces work better because most body parts are round. A big thing is not letting the face get distorted.
Do you consider your subjects more suitable for a female audience or is your clientele easily divided between men and women?
I would say my client base is about 50/50. I can suit a tattoo more for a woman or male depending on what they are looking for. Overall I feel anyone can wear my work.
Have you tattooed outside the US in the past, do you usually attend conventions around the world or is California still your home base?
No I have never travelled abroad. Hopefully in the future. I also like to enjoy vacation when travelling and not worry about work.
Will we see you soon in Europe?
Who knows! We will see what the future has in store.
