The beautiful story of an artist who works at the ‘Golden Times Atelier’ in Cologne, creates freehand “ritual” works and has also recently become a father.
Jonas, what inspired you to become a professional tattoo artist in life?
I’ve always loved creating visual things, especially drawing. After finishing school, I searched for a way to spend most of my time doing what brings me joy while living as freely and independently as possible. This led me to tattooing, and after doing my first tattoo, I knew this was the right path for me.
Regarding the fact that you tattoo freehand, I think there’s little more to add. But could you tell us what it means to you to create a ‘ritual’ tattoo?”
Tattooing, for me, is a ritual that transforms inner change into an outward expression. I aim to help my clients realize their personal vision. To create a tattoo that truly resonates, I approach the process with deep mindfulness, allowing my clients’ intentions, energy, and unique body shapes to guide the design.
Do you think you’ve had a mentor in your life when you started this artistic path? Or do you consider yourself a self-taught artist?
I was fortunate to start as an apprentice in a shop that, unfortunately, no longer exists. There, I learned a lot about hygiene and got to watch different tattooers at work. This gave me a solid foundation, and through my own experience, I discovered what works best for me personally.
“What does working at Golden Times Atelier in Cologne mean to you? Sometimes, there are places that feel as if they were made specifically for what one can do, don’t you think?”
That’s true. For me, an environment where my clients and I can feel relaxed is essential for creative work. Finding the right place isn’t easy, which is why I previously ran my own studio to create that space. However, I missed the daily exchange with other artists. Now, working alongside so many talented people is incredibly inspiring.
I’m very grateful to have finally found a place at ‘Golden Times Atelier’ where everything feels just right.
How did you and Lorena Morato, the owner of the ‘Golden Times Atelier,’ meet?
Last year, I did two guest spots at the ‘Golden Times Atelier’ (IG: @goldentimesatelier). I immediately felt very comfortable in the atelier and with Lorena. She’s such a kind soul and an amazing artist. We like to listen to the same music while working, which is really important, and the vibe was great.
What 2025 do you imagine?
In 2025, I plan to do an extended guest spot and convention tour across Europe in a camper van. The stops aren’t 100% finalized yet, but I’ll announce them soon on my Instagram. I will definitely come back to Berlin (‘Blut und Eisen’ @blut_und_eisen_tattoo) and Jena (‘Downtown Tattoo’ @downtown.tattoo). Visiting my friend Ingo Grawe (IG: @araneo_tattoo) again and in June I will be in Dresden at the beautiful place of Felipe Franetovic (IG: @accsemble.corporis) where we want to create a collaborative project.
I will be based in Cologne, but also travel regularly in the next years.
What is your biggest dream (yet to be realized) related to tattoo art and your life in general?
I dream of building friendships around the world – connections where we can celebrate life, share the passion for tattooing, and grow together as artists. Becoming a father a month ago has deepened this dream. I want to show my son the beauty and diversity of the world and create unforgettable moments with him and my partner.
And your last famous words are…?
These words aren’t mine, but they resonate deeply with me: “Where focus goes, energy flows.”
