Discovering the owner (along with his colleague Sum) of ‘GreenEyes Tattoo Studio’ in Nanjing and his incredible energy in personalizing the Japanese style.
Hi Jerry, can you to tell me a little about yourself…
Hi, I am Jerry and I am based in Nanjing, China. I’ve been tattooing for 16 years. Thank you for the opportunity of this interview. (smiles)
Your style is different from the usual Japanese style, very funny and inspired by the world of comics in outlining certain subjects. Do you agree with me?
Yes haha. I guess you know me quite well! (laughs) I would say I am creating my own “Jerry Sign style” more than just the usual Japanese style.
Do you think you have had any masters in your life or do you consider yourself a 100% self-taught tattoo artist?
I am mostly self-taught. At the same time I believe in other things. I believe the process of learning how to tattoo is simply endless.
So I appreciate and learn from all the amazing artists I’ve met during my journey.
Can you tell me something about your workplace in Nanjing?
Me and my business partner Sum (IG: @ges_sum) started “GreenEyes Tattoo Studio” (IG: @greeneyestattoostudionanjing) nearly 16 years ago. It’s a street shop located in a very lovely neighborhood in Nanjing.
You travel a lot for work: you have already been to the ‘Milan Tattoo Convention’ and Paris (‘Tattoo Planetarium’) and soon you will be in Frankfurt for the ‘Gods of Ink’ (19 to 21 April) and then in Rouen (26 to 28 April). Don’t you ever get tired?
Haha, never ever! (laughs) I enjoy too much just travelling and meeting new people. I can’t thank enough all the clients I met last February in Milan and Paris to kept me so passionate.
Can you tell me about an indelible memory of yours linked to a particular tattoo convention?
I had incredible experiences at last Paris tattoo convention (IG: @tattooplanetarium). The vibe, the people, the passions ecc. I am really looking forward to ‘Gods of Ink’ (IG: @godsofinktattooconvention) in Frankfurt this April.
What will be the other unmissable conventions on your trips in 2024?
I will be attending the ‘China Tattoo Convention’ (IG: @china.tattooconvention) in May and ‘Chiang Mai Tattoo Time’ (IG: @chiangmaitattootime) in Thailand by end of the year. I had beautiful memories with these two Oriental conventions as well.
And your last famous words are… ?
Tattooing is more than just my work. It’s a lifelong learning process. The fuel of my life!
