Versatility is definitely one of the strengths of this tattoo artist who, starting from Brazil, now works in the magnificent Lake Country of British Columbia (Canada).
Hello Fabi, I know you’ve had an interesting life: Brazilian by birth, moved to Canada and in the midst of it all the great love for tattoo art…
Yeah. I’m the third generation of Japanese born in Brazil. I started my tattoo journey in São Paulo where I had a traditional apprenticeship. I got married with a tattoo artist named Cody (IG: @cody.tattoo) in São Paulo and we decided to move to his homeland, Canada. Now we are working hard in our private studio.
About this – where do you usually work in Canada?
Cody and I have a private studio together called ‘North Shore Ink’ (IG: @nsitattoo) and both work with one client a day, by appointment only. It’s a very peaceful environment in Lake Country/British Columbia.
What about your name “Hiromi”?
Hiromi is my middle name. It’s quite common for Japanese descendants born in Brazil to be given a Japanese middle name.
Your style does not look as 100% pure Japanese tattooing. There is definitely a hint of your personality inside. What do you think?
I think my experience growing up in Brazil has influenced my work. My love for flowers and animals has influenced my work as well.
Before I started tattooing, I took traditional painting classes where I really enjoyed painting flowers and birds.
You seem to particularly like the Red and Black color combination in terms of contrast and power of the image it conveys.
It’s true! I usually don’t use a lot of colours. I prefer to use a limited colour pallet which works well with Black & Gray.
Have you already marked down any Canadian or international tattoo conventions in your agenda regarding 2024?
In Canada, maybe Quebec in Summer 2024.
And your last famous words are… ?
Trust the process!
