It opened in early March at Gallerie 1900 “Ethnofuturism”, the art group show curated by Fabrice, owner of this historic tattoo store in Dusseldorf, Germany, an artistic crossroads of different visual disciplines.
Ethnofuturism is an artistic and philosophical movement originating in Estonia that has gone through several phases. In its initial phase, from 1989 to 1994, it was an avant-garde art movement with an emphasis on futurism and characterized by parody, absurdity and provocative statements. Perhaps this is where the title of this exhibition came from…
The exhibition, spread over the location’s two floors, features nearly 200 works on paper by four tattoo artists – Argentinian Eric Stricker, Austrian Stefan Halbwachs, from UK Hanumantra and Jondix Seven Doors.
The theme, the question proposed to the artists as a starting point was: Where do your neo tribal/ ornament tattoo ideas come from?
The result is a visual narrative in which the ancient tribal design related to tattooing shows futuristic twists with ideas from movies, video game graphics and original interpretations related to the styles of the individual artists.
“We are tattoo artists who don’t take designs straight from books. We like to create our own ideas for each client, and that’s what we want to show.”
