Argentinean by origin and currently working in Los Angeles, Facundo Gil is a very active tattoo artist who travels around conventions presenting his black and grey works inspired by Trash Polka with strong contrasts created by playing with his black technique.
We met him at the Sashatattooing Gallery to get to know him better by watching him create one of his powerful skulls.
Hello Facundo you are Argentinian by origin but work in Los Angeles. Did you move there for your job? Would you like to tell us something about yourself?
I was born in Villa Carlos Paz – Cordoba – Argentina. I moved to the United States of America seeking to step out of my comfort zone and to grow in this beautiful profession.
How did the encounter with the tattoo come about?
Since I was a child, I’ve always had a fascination for art, even though I never pursued formal studies. At the age of 19 (in 2014), I made the decision to purchase my first tattoo kit and start self-learning.
I began by tattooing myself and learning from artists I admired.
The style you have chosen favors black, is that right?
From the beginning, the Black and Grey style defined me the most. Over the years, I wanted my work to stand out from the rest, so I started delving into high-contrast techniques and blending them with the “trash polka” style, achieving a greater visual impact.
Are there any subjects you like best? What and why do they fascinate you?
Something I really enjoy doing is tattooing skulls; I’m drawn to textures and depths. I often draw inspiration from everything around me, from the moisture on a wall to stains on the street. Like most artists, I have some tattoo artist role models who inspire me.
Where do you work? Would you like to tell us something about the tattoo shop where you work?
I work in Los Angeles, California, at the Sashatattooing Gallery alongside incredible artists from different countries.
I see you like to attend tattoo conventions. Which ones in particular?
This has been a very intense year for me, attending various conventions both within and outside the USA: Villainarts Chicago as an exhibitor, Baltimore as a judge, Denver as an exhibitor/judge, San Diego as an exhibitor/judge, Ink the Bay (Tampa) as an exhibitor/judge, Empire State tattoo expo (Manhattan ) as an exhibitor, Trusted tattoo Gathering (Ontario) as an exhibitor/judge, Golden State tattoo expo (Pasadena) as an exhibitor/judge, The all-stars tattoo convention (Miami) as an exhibitor, Elite tattoo convention (Cologne) as an exhibitor.
Shall we tell our readers where they can meet you in the coming months?
I love to travel, meet incredible artists, and explore cities. You never know when I might come to your city.
